The Legend of St George and the Dragon
According to Legend, this story originates from a town in ancient Libya.
In this town, there was said to be a lake where a plague-bearing dragon dwelled that terrified all the countryside. To please the dragon, the townsfolk used to feed it a sheep every day, and when the sheep failed, they fed it their children, chosen by lottery.
One day, the lottery fell on the on the king’s daughter. The king was filled with fear and grief, and offered all this gold and silver if his daughter could be spared, however the townsfolk refused this offer and the kings daughter was sent out to the lake, to be fed to the dragon.
By chance, St George rode past the lake and saw the princess trembling. She sent him away, but he vowed to remain and protect her against any foe.
The dragon reared out of the lake and charged. St George with his shield and lance bravely hurried to face the dragon and gave it a deadly wound. With the chains used to tie up the princess, St George leashed the beast and led the dragon back to the town.
St George then called out to all the townsfolk to convert to Christianity and be baptised, then he would slay the dragon in front of them. The King and the townsfolk converted to Christianty and St George killed the dragon before them.
On the site of the dragons death, a prominent church was constructed and all its waters declared holy.
