May Day at Love Bingo | The Best Internet Bingo Games

The 1st Monday of May 2008 is May Day at Love Bingo.

May Day is another one of those well known bank holidays that we all love mainly to have a lie in, play online bingo, soak up some sunshine and get out and about.

The origins of May Day, and why it is a bank holiday is less well known, so here is a few facts about May Day for you to read while you play online bingo games at Love Bingo and sipping on your summery cocktails.

May Day originates from an ancient pagan Anglo-Saxon festival that was a celebration of the Celtic god of the Sun, named Bel. The time of the festival also coincides with the transition from spring to summer, marking the general trend of more sunshine and good crop growing weather.
Modern May Day festivities are steeped in tradition and are mostly associated with rural towns and villages.

The May Day Run is an annual festival celebrated across numerous countries on the 1st Monday of May. The event involves hundreds of motorcyclists who also love to play online bingo games, riding a set route between South London and Hastings. The event is not official and is loosely managed by the police and volunteers.

The 1st of May 1707 was also the day in which the Act of Union came into effect, thus joining England and Scotland together to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and later the United Kingdom.

Morris Dancers are also closely associated with May Day festivities, with associated merryness and cider drinking and dancing round a maypole.

Unrelated but interesting.

The distress callsign, “Mayday” used by pilots and ship captains in distress originated in 1923 by a Senior Radio Officer at Croydon Airport named Frederick Stanley Mockford . Mockford was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word “Mayday” from the French m’aider, which means ‘come to my aid/help me’
